Press In…Then Push Forward

I am a doer. I like to get things done. Give me a checklist…I’ll have it knocked out before you get back to your desk. That’s just the way I’m wired. I have to be DOING.

Sounds great, right? The problem is, sometimes I’m doing what I think is the right thing…only to find that what I’m DOING is not what God wants me to be DOING. Sometimes I push forward without ever taking the time to press in to Him…to hear His voice…to gain His heart and go His direction.

Momentum is essential in our growth:

  • as individuals
  • as believers
  • as leaders
  • as husbands/wives
  • as parents
But, momentum without direction is just wasted effort. We must take the time to press in to God so that we know where we need to push forward. Don’t skip that step.

Do As I Do, Not As I Say

Somewhere along the line, sharing our faith with those who are far from God has been watered down to simply telling people about Jesus. While that does play a vital part in our mission to “go and make disciples”…it was never meant to be the only part.

We must not only share the Gospel in word but in the way that we live. If those outside of a relationship with God are to believe that He can radically change their lives then they must see that we are radically changed. And then, once they do submit their lives to Christ, we cannot leave them there and move on to the next fish.

We MUST begin to walk out faith with those around us.

That’s what Jesus did. He did not only call 12 men around Him, he walked with them for three years. He demonstrated love, power, authority, Truth, sacrifice. He “did life” with those he was leading.

We have to stop leading people with our words and start leading them with our lives. Paul told those following him to, “imitate me as I imitate Christ.” (1 Cor. 11:1) That’s a bold statement to make. We must live our lives in a way that people who want to know what it means to be like Jesus can watch us and do what we do…and not just what we say.

Don’t Forget to Refuel

I am the world’s worst when it comes to putting gas in my car. I simply don’t think about it. Day after day will go by and I will continue to drive without ever having a thought to whether the needle has made its way lazily to the “E”. Then, as if by chance, I will glance down to find that it is prayer, not fuel, that has been getting me from home to work…and, I will finally pull in to the nearest gas station, puttering all the way.

It’s very easy to do that with passion as well. Got places a call on our lives and we run after it like there’s no tomorrow. But, if we’re not careful, we will continue to run and never notice that our passion is being used up little by little. And, if we’re not careful, we will find ourselves unable to finish the race because we’ve run out of fuel.

Take time to refuel. Feed your passion so that it will grow and not dwindle. For me, it is in those moments that I stop and just meditate on where God is taking me. I move my eye past the task at hand, only for a moment, so that I can see the destination…and my passion needle moves back to full. I cherish those moments because they are what keep me going.

What about you? How do you refuel?
