Sometimes You Gotta Move Your Desk

I am a person who is obsessed with aesthetics. Things HAVE to look good. I like a neat, well-decorated office complete with appropriate Feng Shui. I keep few if any icons on my desktop because I believe a person should choose a wallpaper they want to look at.

Yet, here I am…trying to figure out how I can dishevel my office just enough to fit another couch in it. Why? Because there is a small group of young people at our church that need a place they can go where they feel loved, accepted, and where they can find and follow God. In my opinion, reaching people trumps office decor.

We cannot forget that ministry is about people. And, sometimes, we have to dishevel our lives just a bit if we are going to effective reach those who truly need to be reached. We have to look past our neat, pretty little churches so we can see the harvest that is waiting for something to be willing to get out of their comfort zone. And, sometimes, that means you have to move your desk.

Plug it In…Plug it In

Leadership takes a lot out of you. It takes:

  • time
  • energy
  • emotion

If we, as leaders, are not careful…we can very easily burn out -or- even cause damage to those we lead because of our own exhaustion. That’s why it is so important to find ways to disconnect & plug into something that refuels you. It could be something simple like:

  • taking a “me” day
  • spending time with friends/family who put life into you & don’t take life out
  • engage in a hobby or interest

As leaders, if we do not take care of ourselves, we cannot effectively take care of us. As you feel your battery getting low…take time to plug it in.

Traffic Jams Suck!

I have traffic jams. They are so against my fast-paced personality. When I get in the car…I have a specific destination in mind. I know how long it should take to get to that destination. The last thing I want to do is get stuck sucking toxic tailpipe.

On the freeway, traffic jams keep us from getting to our destination. In life, they do exactly the same thing. We know where we want to go in life…but sometimes traffic just gets in our way. We find ourselves stuck in a jam because:

  • we’ve taken a wrong turn and ended up on the wrong road
  • we’re on the right road but at the wrong time
  • circumstances or situations have stalled our completely stopped our progress.

So how do we get out out of our jam?

Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God…above everything. Psalm 46:10 (Msg)

When we find yourself in one of life’s traffic jams, we have to take time to refocus.

  • Ask God if you’re on the right road. His destination for you may not be the same as yours.
  • Wait on God’s timing instead of pushing through ahead of Him. The right thing at the wrong time is the wrong thing.
  • Turn to Him in your circumstances. Remember, He is bigger than EVERYTHING
