Changing Lives or “Coming Soons”

One of my greatest Sunday morning pet peeves is the “Sunday announcements”. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration for me to say I absolutely HATE them. I mean think about it…you just finished:

  • inviting people to worship
  • instructing them with Truth from God’s Word
  • impressing on them a challenge for life transformation
And, what do you do next? Read off a bullet point list of all the upcoming events at your church. Wow.
People will best remember the very last thing they hear. So, what do we want people to remember? what God is speaking into their lives? or what time the lady’s auxiliary group is having tea? I’ll give you a hint…it ain’t you, ladies. Sorry.
So how do we communicate what’s happening without turning Sunday morning into an advertising block? Here’s what I’ve found helps:
  • Provide a central location for people to obtain information…like an information table.
  • Use your technology to promote events prior to and directly following the service.
  • Make events available online and in some print form like a calendar or brief list (not fliers. HATE fliers.)
  • Empower individual ministries to promote their events within your church’s communication structure.
  • STOP DOING SO MUCH! If it takes 5 minutes to rattle off coming events…you have TOO MANY.
We have to keep people  in the know…but, I’d rather keep them in the Presence.

Managing in the Middle

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of two visions? You know God has called you to where you are “for such a time as this”. At the same time, God has pulled back the curtain to reveal just a taste of a future calling. If you have, then you know it can be both exciting and exhausting at the same time.

So here’s my question and I want to see what you guys who have been there suggest…what have you found that helps you continue to operate in excellence where you are while maintaining passion for where God is taking you?

Stepping Out of the Business of Busyness

When it comes to scheduling, less truly is more. I’m not sure where we got this notion that the more we have on our calendars, the more effective we are being. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Busyness is just flat out bad for business…especially Kingdom business. We can get so busy “doing church” that we forget to BE the church. If we’re not careful, programs can replace people as our priority. Before you know it, everyone’s too busy at the church building that no one is out impacting the community…you know, that big place around your building that you’ve been called to reach.

The solution? CLEAR YOUR CALENDAR. Build in intentional time where you are investing in building and maintaining relationships with believers AND non-believers. Then, teach those in your church to do the same. Don’t offer so many things at the church that you’re keeping the missionaries out of the mission field. Do less…win more.
